The annual Rose Black Awards for Nursing were presented at CVMC on May 8, 2008. Rose Black and her family, which includes son, Dr. Percy Black, his daughter Dr. Deborah Black, Rose’s daughter, Edith Black Zfass and their respective families had a genuine desire to honor nursing. This was the result of Rose’s experience as a patient at Central Vermont Medical Center beginning in early 2000 and Woodridge Nursing Home during 2001 and 2002. She always had a special place in her heart for others who were models of caring, particularly nurses.
The award for Central Vermont Medical Center Hospital went to Diane Murray RN, from Waterbury, Vermont who works on 2 South, the hospital’s medical-surgical unit. Diane’s positive attitude and enthusiasm for nursing are infectious. She is always in a positive mood and gives one-hundred percent of herself, committed to her patients and their families. Her patients sing her praises and she handles even the most difficult patient with humor and respect. Diane is nurturing, compassionate and always strives for the best outcomes. She also takes the time to train new nurses, always with a smile. Diane has boundless energy and cares for her patients with joy. Montpelier resident Kathleen Hurley, RN, received The Rose Black Award for the Woodridge Nursing Home at Central Vermont Medical Center. She is a compassionate, caring and understanding nurse. Kathleen has a calming way about her that never fades, even in the most stressful situations. She will do whatever it takes to make sure the residents she cares for are at ease and completely comfortable. Kathleen has been described as “an angel” by patients and their families. Even the most anxious and cognitively impaired patients are put at ease by Kathleen’s presence – her soft voice and soft touch.
