November 7, 2006 Berlin, Vt – The Central Vermont Medical Center Board of Trustees recently announced the CVMC campus will go tobacco free as of Thursday, November 16, 2006. This date coincides with the Great American Smokeout sponsored by the American Cancer Society. There is indisputable evidence that the use of tobacco products is detrimental to good health. CVMC recognizes its responsibility to discourage such a significant health risk. CVMC offers a series of four workshops each month at a variety of times and locations in central Vermont to help smokers take a positive approach to quitting.
The use of tobacco products by employees, physicians, volunteers and visitors, including independent contractors anywhere in or on the property of CVMC and its satellite facilities is prohibited. Smoking and the use of tobacco products by patients of the medical center, will be prohibited, while on CVMC property.
According to the American Cancer Society, “lung cancer is the top cancer killer of both men and women in the US, claiming more than 160,000 lives each year. More than 44 million US adults still smoke, putting themselves at risk of not only lung cancer, but also other types of cancer as well as heart disease, stroke, emphysema, and other ailments.”
