August 30, 2007 The Women and Children’s Unit at Central Vermont Medical Center recently instituted a new program: “Quiet Time” for moms and their babies. In keeping with the Unit’s commitment to family-centered care, there are no restrictions on visiting hours for close family members. The new program was based on research indicating the importance of time set aside for new mothers to rest, get to know their babies, and become at ease with breastfeeding. “We know it is important for families to share the excitement and joy of a new baby, and we welcome siblings as special guests. We also know the benefit of a peaceful interlude in the afternoon for new families.” says Kathaleen Pelletier, RN, Nurse Manager of the Women and Children’s Unit. “Quiet Time” extends from 1:30 to 3:00 pm daily. The hospital requests that family and friends visit and call before or after these hours. The afternoon quiet period is a growing trend in hospitals across the country, and has been very well received by new moms in Central Vermont, according to Pelletier.
