September 20, 2007 President Bush’s Council on Service and Civic Participation created the President’s Volunteer Service Award Program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example inspire others to engage in volunteer service. Close to 100 Central Vermont Medical Center volunteers were honored by receiving Volunteer Service Award lapel pins, a personalized certificate of achievement, and a congratulatory letter from the President of the United States, for the hours of service they contributed to CVMC in 2006. Seventy bronze lapel pins were awarded to CVMC volunteers with 100 to 249 hours of service in 2006 and there were 19 silver level awards for 250 to 499 hours. Six volunteers achieved the gold level. These dedicated men and women each contributed 500 or more hours of their time to CVMC in 2006. Gold winners were: Laurel Finucane, Waterbury, 516 hours; Shirley Landry, East Montpelier, 607 hours; Andrea Stitzel, So. Burlington, 623 hours; Roberta Bliss, Barre, 639 hours; Nira Gheradi, Barre, 674 hours; and Lorraine Watker, 741 hours. “We have a wonderful cadre of volunteers,” noted Hjonis, CVMC Manager of Volunteer Services. “We’re very fortunate to have over 300 volunteers contributing over 30,000 hours every year to the medical center.” People who are interested in becoming CVMC volunteers can find more information and an online application at the CVMC web site www.centraltoyourwellbeing.org or by contacting Hjonis Hanson, volunteer manager, at 371-4199.
