When You Are Pregnant: Plan Ahead
When you are pregnant, there's a lot to think about it. One of the decisions you need to make is where your baby will be born. You want to make sure that the facility where you chose to have your baby is right for you. And you want to select a doctor or midwife you can relate to and feel confident in.

CVMC Gives You Options.
Choose the type of childbirth experience you feel will best suit you.

Prior to delivery, we encourage you to attend Childbirth Education Classes given by our certified childbirth educators. Our instructors are registered nurses, certified in Childbirth Education. They are all part of our Women's and Children's Staff.

There are many books you can buy that will tell you what to expect throughout your pregnancy. Having regular pre-natal visits with your doctor will also help assure you that things are going well. There is also an abundance of information in our Health Information and Resource Center, located in the lower lobby of the hospital. For more information, including a free subscription to the award-winning magazine, MAMA, visit the March of Dimes web site (
www.marchofdimes.org).

As the delivery date approaches, you want to be relaxed, ready and in good physical condition. Our Pre-natal and Post-partum exercise classes can help.

It also helps to plan ahead. Think about what to bring to the hospital well in advance of your due date. And make sure you have selected a Pediatrician. Please click on
Find a Provider to see a list of Pediatricians on staff at CVMC.

Once your baby has arrived, our Center for Breastfeeding will provide you with access to Certified Lactation Consultants to answer questions and help you with breastfeeding your baby. These consultants also do follow-up phone calls after you are discharged (whether you breastfeed or not) and will meet with families in our clinic if additional assistance is needed.

They are available for telephone support, and do make follow-up calls after discharge. They also run an on-site clinic.

All our nursing staff is knowledgeable and always available to support breastfeeding families 24 hrs a day.

All breastfeeding Moms receive a Medela double pump kit at the time of discharge. A packet of breastfeeding information is also given to new parents. Included in the packet is a breastfeeding log to track the first week, a list of community resources, information on the storage of breast milk, breast engorgement, breastfeeding after returning to work our Bosom Buddies Peer Support Group information, and much more.

Medela breast pumps are sold and rented through the Center for Breastfeeding located here within the Women's and Children's Unit. Other breastfeeding supplies and aids are available for sale.

Hepatitis B Vaccine:
The Central Vermont Medical Center Women and Children’s Unit has begun offering Hepatitis B vaccine immunization to new parents for their newborns. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) made an official statement on January 18, 2006 about the recommendation of vaccination. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends immunizations to ensure that newborn infants are protected from Hepatitis B virus infection, a major cause of cirrhosis and liver cancer in the United States. The ACIP now recommends universal infant Hepatitis B vaccination should begin at birth on the majority of infants. For more information "Hepatitis B Vaccine What You Need to Know"

Infant car seats are available for sale for our clients at the Women's and Children's Unit. We have a certified car seat technician here and can supply parents with safety information from the Governor's Highway Commission, an updated list of current car seat recalls and information on car seat checks in our committee. Vermont Law requires all children up to age 8 to ride in a federally approved safety seat. For more information, go to
